Blog Assignment #4

Blanche is a flirt. Blanche first encounter with her sister’s husband Stanley was very flirtatious.  Blanche says, “ In my youth I excited some admiration. But look at me now. Would you think its possible that I was ever considered to be – attractive?” (26). Throughout, the entire plot Blanche is fishing for a compliment from Stanley. Blanche want know if Stanley finds her attractive. As a result, she constantly flirts with him asking him how she looks and what he thinks of her. In the play the author indicates Blanche is “smiling at him radiantly” in the process of asking these questions.

Stella is caught up between Stanley and Blanche.  In the first scene it opens up to Stella, “in a rickety armchair fanning herself with a palm-leaf and eating chocolates from a paper bag” (5).  This demonstrates Stella’s classy side; in her old life and her more relaxed side, in her new life. To me this illustrates her actions towards Stanley and Blanche because she always trying to please both of them. However, Stella constantly reminds the both of them they’re from two different worlds and should try to understand each other. Being that Stan is harsh towards Blanche, Stella constantly reminds him to be nice to Blanche, “ And try to understand her and be nice to her, Stan” (21). Stan and Blanche are from totally different worlds and Stella is constantly trying to get them to come to understand each other, but Stan think Blanche is a liar and Blanche do not think Stan is what’s best for her Stella.

By viewing the video on Darwinian Beauty, I agree with Dennis Dutton. Everyone is asked to give their definition of beauty and they all say, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”. In this case, I would have to agree to disagree because everyone appreciates beauty differently. I believe our society has an effect on the way we view or determine beauty because we are so into our own culture. Beauty is something we adapt too, like Dennis Dutton said because our society already determines what is beauty for us. The presentation on Natural Selection made me look at beauty in another way, too. Dutton’s speech about Charles Darwin and the theory of Natural Selection made me take another look at beauty. As Dennis Dutton used the peacock as an example of natural selection it made me open my eyes because I never looked at it as simply colors. The female peacocks determine their mates based on the colors of the feathers. So, I believe beauty is more complex than many may think it is.

Portrait of a Dog

My group and I focused on Eric Fischl painting, " Portrait of a Dog". The painting was made in 1987, it was made of four panels that were combined together to create one portrait. The painting was 9' 5 x 14' 2 3/4 (287 x 433.7 cm) made up of oil on a canvas. Although, the painting was made up of four panels the artists expect the person viewing the portrait to focus the dog. As my group and I did research we saw the same dog in another painting, we realized it has some significance to Eric Fischl. Being that Mr. Fischl is portrayed as "Naturalistic Stylist" he may feel a dog symbolize nature in some way.

My Goals Final Draft

My mission is to join the National Honor Society because it provides an educational challenge, allows me to become my own inspiration and has an effect on my future.

(1)Academics will be my main challenge getting into the national honor society. The biggest academic challenges I will face are exams and grades. Exams have always been my downfall and I believe it’s because I am not able to control my anxiety. The moment an exam is placed in front of me I freeze up and blank out causing me to fail. Allowing these exams to intimidate me I fail them and this is hurting me in an enormous way. The national honor society will boost my confidence in a way my anxiety will not bother me at all. I looked into national honor society requirements and realized I am up for a challenge because you need the minimum grade point average of 3.0. Knowing that I would need a 3.0 grade point average to join the national honor society I set my goal of having a 3.7. I set myself such a high goal so, I know I am definitely meeting the qualification of the honor society as well as challenging myself. My only solution of getting into the national honor society is by excelling in all my classes and asking questions. I will excel by making myself responsible to complete tasks on time and liable to do extra. Likewise, participating in class will become added onto my list of main focuses. I know I will have challenges, but I am mentally prepared. Getting into the Honor Society will be a difficult task but, I am looking forward to the challenge. I am getting back into the system of college and it can be overwhelming at times, but I will not let anything discourage me to from reaching my goal. The challenges I will face along the road to success will be substantial because it has significance to my personality and career.

(2)One reason the National Honor Society will be significant for me to is because it provides me a challenge and allows me to be my own inspiration. I look at other people for inspiration all the time, now I just want to be my own inspiration. I want to see myself as a role model and have other people view me as a role model too. I do not come from a place where you can look up to everyone. Living in my environment you have a selective few people that you can say you want to be like, but not all of them are doing the right thing. This is why joining the National Honor Society is so significant to me because I want to be able to tell the children there is more out there. I want my friends, family and outsiders to look at me and say, she grew up in a tough place, but still was able to accomplish her goals. I read a quote by Walter Anderson that said, “I am responsible. Although I may not be able to prevent the worst from happening, I am responsible for my attitude toward the inevitable misfortunes that darken life. Bad things do happen; how I respond to them defines my character and the quality of my life. I can choose to sit in perpetual sadness, immobilized by the gravity of my loss, or I can choose to rise from the pain and treasure the most precious gift I have; life itself.” I agree with this quote because no one is going to hand you anything. For a long time now, I have allowed failing exams to take a great toll on my life. Once I failed an exam I automatically go into defense mode as if the teacher is out to get me or failed me on purpose. Realizing I am not being reasonable and mad for all the wrong reasons I decided to change. No longer was I going to shut down if I failed and exam or did not get the grade I wanted, but push myself to get the grade I wanted. By taking responsibility and accepting my grade I can now go get the help I needed from the right sources instead of shutting everyone out and not getting help at all. We are all granted life, but it is up to us to make something of it. I know how important it is for a child to have someone to look up to and I know it must feel good; I just want to be able to achieve my goal of joining the National Honor Society and becoming an inspiration to others.

(3)The National Honor Society is an honorable club and to be accepted into this organization has a dominant impact on your future. Being a part of the National Honor Society can open a lot of doors in anyone’s career. However, if I was to join the national honor society I would be able to receive scholarships and I could easily transfer. To be able to transfer without any problems is a great deal because the grades are the last things you want to worry about once you’ve decide on a school. It’s an honor to be a part of the Honor Society and you will not have to worry grades because you have to have incredible grades in order to remain in the organization. Having this organization continuously push you this more of a reason I want to join the national honor society because some organizations do not look at grades so much once the person is recruited. The National Honor Society will keep me on my toes and prepare me for what to expect in the future, which is take responsibility and continue to excel.

(2) My plan is to conquer my challenges and get into the National Honor Society. Although, my challenges are not simple I know I will be able to achieve them. I know I will achieve my challenges because I want to be successful and the significance of being my own as well as others inspiration comes as a great deal to me.

I know to get into the National Honor Society I need to have substantial grades. Although, I did not do so well on my first exam I will try no to let it discourage me from reaching my goal.
